I began this journey into living slow and simple the day I decided not to return to work but instead stay home with daughter. Although I didn't realize it then, living a slower and simpler life was the path I was set upon.
Then homeschooling found it's way into our lives and slow living really set it. There is no rushing out the door every morning, stressing about finding lost shoes and figuring out lunches. I am also mindful of what and how many activities my children are in at any given time. I want me kids to have time to be kids and know that it is ok to be bored once in awhile.
The minimal part didn't come into play until 2 years ago, when I first read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo. After reading that book I decided right then that I wanted to live a more minimalist type of life.
Of course reading a book and wishing for a different life is the easy part, the actual process of going through my closets, drawers, cupboards, and storage bins was daunting and overwhelming. Luckily my husband was completely on board with this new way of living, and was right there beside me, pushing me to break the emotional ties I had with all our "stuff".
Since the beginning of January, I have been on a fast track of accomplishing our version of a simplified and minimal lifestyle. Saying "throw it away" and "give it away" have come to be so easy. Why? Because I decided to just do it, a little bit each day, and after awhile magic started to happen. Our spaces actually started look and feel minimal. I can see the end is near.
